Medicine…business and industrial development…the state of the economy…even the exploration of space. Not many issues today can be discussed without some question about their potential effect on the environment. The following are excerpts from a varietyof news columns, journals and periodicals.
In a recent survey (Autumn 1987) of the state of emergency response planning in Ontario, it was found thatwhile 84 per cent of the population is protected by6 emergency response plans. 142 communities in Ontario have no plans.

The Canadian Chemical Producer’s Association (CCPA). In conjunction with the Canadian Association of of Chemical Distributors and the Canadian Fertilizer Institute, recentlt established the National Chemical Referral Centre. Through this service callers using the toll-free numer 1-800-267-6666 for non-emergency about the responsible use of chemicals and and chemical products will be referred to experts in Canada’s chemical industry for answers.

Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. has set up the first AECL station in Pinawa, Manitoba as a special laboratory to analyze non-nuclear toxic substances. The Crown corporation plans to compete with private laboratories throughout North America in this fast-growing market.

According to Emergency Preparedness Canada, “If you serve two four year terms in the mayor’s chair in any Canadian City, the chances are one in three or four that you will be faced with an emergency.” One way for local municipal officials to find out more about how to plan ahead to meet the effects of emergencies is to contact the provincial emergency preparedness organization. They can arrange for elected officials or their deputies to attend classes designed to provide this necessary training The courses are conducted at the Canadian Emergency Preparedness College in Arnprior, Ontario. All transportation and accommodation are paid by Emergency Preparedness Canada from their time a participant leaves home until his/her return.
